Awash Bank introduces five Mastercard cards amid Ethiopia's FX reforms
According to StockMarket.et, Awash Bank has launched four international payment-card products and a domestic contactless debit card with Mastercard, according to October 9 reporting by StockMarket.et and Ethiopian Business Review. The rollout follows changes to Ethiopia's foreign-exchange rules, but published coverage does not establish customers' actual FX availability or card fees.

What happened
Awash Bank introduced a five-product Mastercard portfolio at an Addis Ababa event reported on October 9. The lineup includes a World Elite international debit card, Platinum, Gold and Corporate international prepaid cards, and the Awash Plus domestic contactless debit card. StockMarket.et and Ethiopian Business Review both described the launch. Details of card eligibility, foreign-currency spending ceilings and full pricing have not yet been independently confirmed by ATN.
Why it matters
The launch expands the types of card-based domestic and cross-border payments Ethiopian bank customers may be able to make. It is an important distribution step during Ethiopia's foreign-exchange reforms, but issuing an internationally accepted card is not the same as assuring foreign-currency balances, usable limits, or universal merchant acceptance. Those operational terms determine how valuable the products will be to households and businesses.
What to watch
Watch for Awash Bank's official fee schedule, customer eligibility requirements, funding rules and card-specific foreign-currency limits. ATN will distinguish the bank's announced capabilities from independently documented transactions and customer access.
