NBE schedules $840 million in six FX auctions for October–December
According to Capital Ethiopia, The National Bank of Ethiopia scheduled $840 million in six foreign-exchange auctions for the second quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year, beginning October 13. The scheduled supply exceeds the first quarter's $500 million programme by $340 million, or 68%. These are planned offerings, not confirmed completed sales.
What happened
The central bank's October 6 schedule provides for six auctions of $140 million each, on October 13 and 27, November 10 and 24, and December 8 and 22, 2026. The $840 million programme is 68% larger than the $500 million first-quarter regular allocation. Each scheduled auction is $15 million larger than the previous $125 million amount.
Why it matters
The calendar adds a predictable mechanism for banks seeking foreign currency to settle imports and other eligible payments, but a larger auction offer is not the same as actual dollar sales. The first quarter saw uneven demand: StockMarket.et reported banks bid about $470.17 million at an August 12 sale offering $125 million, while a September 9 sale was undersubscribed. Bid volumes and clearing rates—not the announcement alone—will indicate how much foreign-exchange liquidity banks can absorb.
What to watch
The first scheduled auction is October 13, followed by October 27, November 10 and 24, and December 8 and 22. Compare each result with its $140 million offer: total bids, amount allotted, number of successful banks and the weighted-average birr-dollar rate. Track whether any unsold allocation carries over rather than assuming all $840 million has entered the market.
